Mary Hummert

I’m Mary. My husband and I have three Irish Setters: Chase, Gunner and Breeze. We have owned Irish Setters since 1975. My dogs and I are active in Conformation, Obedience, Rally and Therapy Dog work. Chase and I volunteer at UPMC Shadyside hospital and Woodhaven Personal Care Home. Gunner and Chase spend fall weekends hunting birds with by husband, Hank. Breeze was our latest addition, and has a passion for Agility.

CH Ohkom’s Angel In Disguise, CD, RN, CGC, TDIA  “Chase”

Chase is a real sweet boy. After completing his AKC Championship, we moved on to the obedience ring where he finished his CD title in three consecutive shows, earning a nice 1st place at a large all breed show, a 2nd place the next day, and several weeks later earned his third leg in obedience. He was #3 Irish Setter in the country in Novice A obedience the year he titled. From there it was on to Rally!  We took two rally classes, and  headed off to compete at the Irish Setter National Specialty Show in Rhode Island where he earned his first leg!  Again, he finished that title in three consecutive trials!  He has worked for several years as a therapy dog in a personal care home, and  truly loves the elderly residents.  For the past year, he has been visiting patients at UPMC Shadyside Hospital, where in addition to providing warm and fuzzy therapy to patients, visitors and staff ,we continue to educate about the importance of training in Irish Setters, (and any breed, really) and to dispel myths that all Irish Setters are “high strung”. He is a wonderful ambassador of the breed, and the titles on both ends of his name indicate he really is a  well rounded dog! – and the best friend I could ever have.

Ohkom’s Honky Tonk Angel  “Gunner”

Brains, Beauty and Birdiness best describe the Gunner (and not necessarily in that order!). Gunner is Hank’s best buddy, and a bird dog extraordinaire.  Hank has been hunting with Irish since the 70’s, but swears the Gunner is the best bird dog he’s ever had.  He has the conformation and the stamina necessary to spend hours in the field, and the desire to do just that.  Other hunters often stop to admire that beautiful red headed boy, and to comment “don’t see too many Irish setters hunting:”  We are working on changing that!  Chase often joins the hunt (when he is not in the show ring), and the ‘boys’ are  showing Breeze the ropes so she can carry on the tradition.  Gunner loves soft beds and spending Sunday mornings at the gun club watching Hank shoot sporting clays. When the guys gather afterward to sit on the bench and catch up, Gunner can be found sitting right beside them. Truly a man’s best friend….

Limerick’s Against The Wind  “Breeze” NAP, NJP, CGC

“Girls just wanna have fun” best describes this busy little puppy!  She is passionate about playing ball, running in the fields with ‘the boys’, and agility!  This little beauty is being shown in conformation, and was proud to make the cut at the National Specialty Show in Michigan Summer 2006 (she was in a class of 29 and another class of 48!)  She was introduced to agility equipment during her puppy activity classes and just loves it, so we are continuing to take agility classes and have started competing in both Standard courses and Jumpers With Weaves (if you see a redhead flying by at 100 mph wearing a pink collar, you may have seen her!). She loves bossing her brothers around, and keeping all the toys for herself!  She has been a wonderful addition to our family!
